Malaysia‘s national power company Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has reported losses of more than US$11 billion (RM4,6 billion) due to illegal use of electricity by cryptocurrency miners between 2020 and August 2025.
During this time, the country’s Ministry of Energy identified 13,827 facilities associated with the illegal consumption of electricity for cryptocurrency mining. Some equipment, such as Bitcoin mining rigs, was seized during law enforcement operations.
In August 2025, during a police raid, TNB confiscated 61 ASICs in the Manjung district. In Terengganu, 45 vehicles were confiscated during a separate operation.
According to TNB, electricity theft linked to cryptocurrency mining increased by nearly 300% from 2018 to 2024. The number of detected cases increased from 610 in 2018 to 2397 in 2024.
In July 2025, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said that about RM4,8 billion had been lost due to illegal Bitcoin mining using stolen electricity since 2018.
Despite the fact that Malaysia has no law prohibiting mining, TNB has begun compiling a database containing complete information on the owners and tenants of premises suspected of electricity theft. Furthermore, the agency has begun installing smart meters at distribution substations to detect electricity manipulation in real time.
