The Republican-led US Senate on Tuesday passed legislation that would repeal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Brazil and end the national emergency he declared in July in response to Brazil’s prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro for an alleged coup attempt.
Similar measures to roll back Trump’s tariffs on Canada and other countries around the world are expected to be put to a vote later this week.
Meanwhile, the Brazil bill has been sent to the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives, where it will likely be shelved. House Republicans have repeatedly blocked bills to repeal Trump’s tariffs.
Senate Democrats, who argue that Trump used bogus emergency declarations to justify some of his tariffs, have vowed to push for a rescission vote on lifting the trade measures.
People are suffering. Because of President Trump’s tariff policies, they are paying more for food, clothing, healthcare, electricity, and building materials, said Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia.
Interestingly, these statements were also supported by Republican senators.
