Sweden may be close to turning on Bitcoin into their national reserves. On October 1, the country’s legislators submitted a proposal to parliament to create a strategic BTC reserve. It calls on the government to explore the largest cryptoasset as a hedge against inflation and a tool for diversifying state assets.
To finance the reserve, lawmakers propose using bitcoins confiscated by law enforcement agencies, rather than allocating new funds.
Last November, Sweden passed a law allowing the confiscation of luxury goods and cryptocurrencies from individuals who cannot explain the origin of their wealth. To date, more than $8,4 million worth of such assets have been confiscated.
The proposal, which is due for review by October 15, would transfer confiscated cryptocurrencies to the Swedish Riksbank or an authorized body, bypassing traditional auctions.
This is not the first proposal to create Bitcoin-fund in Sweden. In April 2025, two legislators sent a letter to Swedish Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson. In it, they urged the government to adopt a new national strategy, including Bitcoin into the country’s financial planning system.
