Warren Buffett’s bet on the S&P 500 was a miscalculation – the index lost to BTC.

Billionaire hedge fund manager is known to favor stock investments, but the S&P 500 has lagged by 88% since 2020.

Opening Bell Daily newsletter co-founder Phil Rosen noted that while the S&P 500 has risen 106% in U.S. dollars since 2020, it has seen a significant decline in Bitcoin.

The Standard and Poor’s 500, or S&P 500, is a stock index that tracks the performance of 500 leading companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges.

Since 1957, it has delivered inflation-adjusted annual returns of about 6,68%, which is higher than the average U.S. inflation rate.

Perhaps for this reason, renowned American entrepreneur Warren Buffett often touts the S&P 500 index as the optimal choice for the average investor. He advocates a 90/10 investment strategy, where 90% of the portfolio is allocated to S&P 500 stocks and 10% to short-term US Treasury bonds.

In 2025, the S&P 500 index rose to a record $6715,79, adding 14,43% year-to-date. Bitcoin Over the same period, it has grown by 32%, rising above $125,000 last Saturday, October 6.

Thus, according to OfficialData.Org, the return on $100 invested in the S&P 500 since the beginning of 2020 was about $209,85 by July 2025. The same $100 invested in Bitcoin, were valued at $1473,87.
